Viewers who pledge £500 will be offered the chance to sing on the theme tune, while £1,000 gets them a walk-on part in Storyline

A group of soap opera veterans are appealing to viewers to fund a new show set behind the scenes of a fictional drama – and are offering the incentive of getting a part in the programme if the pledge is large enough.

Former Hollyoaks star Terri Dwyer, who played Ruth Osborne; Jane Gurnett, who starred as Crossroads owner Kate Russell; and Mark Homer, who played EastEnder Tony Hills, have signed up to appear in the show called Storyline.

Its writer, Neil Anthony Docking, and director, Maxine Evans, are using the fundraising website Kickstarter to try to get £10,000 to make three episodes to be shown for free online in the hope the show gets picked up.

The show is set behind the scenes of a “long-running radio drama” about life in a smart block of flats in London.

Viewers who pledge £500 will be offered the chance to sing on the theme tune, while £1,000 gets them a walk-on part.

Docking, who has worked on Emmerdale and Casualty, said it was “an ambitious project”.

He said: “We’re aiming high. We want to vie with our favourite comedies and attempt to make something as good, as clever, as daft, as funny as the best of them.

“And, at the same time, make our mark with something a little bit different, a little bit original.”
